Hydraulic cylinders are vital for lifting, pushing and controlling heavy loads. Because they operate under high pressure and intense mechanical stress, they are among the most frequently repaired components. Even small faults can reduce performance or lead to major failure if left untreated.
Common Cylinder Problems
- Leaking Seals: Seals inside the cylinder wear over time due to friction, heat and contamination. Once they lose their ability to hold pressure, fluid begins to leak, causing a drop in performance and creating oil build-up around the rod and fittings.
- Bent Or Damaged Rods: Cylinder rods can bend when equipment is operated under uneven loads or misalignment. A bent rod leads to uneven wear on seals, restricted movement and eventually leaks or complete failure if not corrected.
- Scoring & Internal Wear: Dirt, metal particles or degraded oil act as abrasives inside the cylinder, scratching the barrel and piston surfaces. These grooves reduce sealing efficiency, increase friction and shorten the lifespan of the cylinder.
- Corrosion: When moisture enters the system or equipment operates in corrosive conditions, rust forms on rods and internal surfaces. Corrosion damages the smooth finish needed for sealing, leading to leaks and reduced cylinder strength.
